Timeline of Concern
US equity markets have had their worst week since 2008. The S&P500 has tumbled 13% since its peak on the 19th February, a mere 7 trading days ago. The sell-off was broad-based with no sectors spared.
The market impact of the CoronaVirus, or COVID-19, began as it spread outside of China. The US market started to fall when South Korea, a major cog in the global supply chain, and then Italy, reported cases and the infection rate gained momentum. Major US companies such as Apple and Microsoft with exposures to China then started to report that their revenues would be negatively affected even as the rate of infection in China began to slow.
Up to now, the US has been relatively free of the virus. However, the penny dropped last Wednesday night as an infected patient was detected in California where the source of the infection was not known. This is called a community spread. The impact of the news was compounded by a top CDC official stating that she expected to see community spread in the US, as well as the Governor of California informing that the state was monitoring 8,400 people who had arrived from Asia on commercial flights. California had 28 confirmed cases, half of whom were on board the Diamond Princess Cruise ship. On Friday, the WHO raised their risk assessment of the COVID-19 to “very high” as the number of infected countries spread to 49. In all, the US has 71 confirmed cases and has just announced the first death on Sunday….

As Japan continues to experience exponential growth in tourism, tourists are more frequently leaving the major cities and venturing out into the various islands, hidden away prefectures and charming outer regions. Fukuoka prefecture, in the southern part of Japan is where Odyssey has its first planned historical building acquisition, specifically in the port town of Port Moji. Odyssey’s strategy to acquire and convert this one-of-kind historical building with the help of famed interior designer Hashimoto Yukio, will create a stunning boutique hotel that will support the recent gentrification of the area and the city’s rise as a popular tourist destination.
It is also encouraging to see that Odyssey’s efforts, coupled with Hashimoto’s clout, will have an effect on the prefecture as a whole and not just the town. As seemingly never-ending numbers of international tourists flock to Japan’s shores and domestic tourists continue to explore their beloved homeland, its no surprise that the industry is thriving and expanding to all corners of Japan.
A recent broadcast on the NHK television network on the Japan Railway Journal named ‘Nishi-Nippon Railroad: Fine Dining on an Even Finer Tourist Train’ is an insight into the potential for growth in the tourism industry in the under-marketed and under-invested regions of Japan. In March 2019 the Rail Kitchen Chikugo opened a route which ends in the town of our future acquisition – Port Moji; this route lets tourists see more of the prefecture of Fukuoka while sampling local cuisine on the way. The news broadcast reveals how much tourists thoroughly enjoy the experience and Port Moji.
The unique tourist experience mentioned above is another reason why the Japanese tourism market continues to grow and expand across Fukuoka and, indeed, the country. Odyssey’s strategy continues to be to identify growing areas and work with local experts and talent and we see this news story and the new railroad as yet more confirmation of our predictions and winning strategy, as Port Moji’s growth into another amazing tourist getaway continues.

[Foreign tourists in Japan visiting rural areas like Kanazaka, no longer limiting themselves to metropolitan cities such as Osaka and Tokyo. (Photo by Nobuyoshi Shioda)]
From Nikkei Asian Review:
“Foreign tourist consumption in Japan — including travel expenditures while in the country — totaled 4.5 trillion yen in 2018, up about 30% from 2015. Consumption in rural areas soared at a much faster pace, nearly 60%, during the same period.
More foreign tourists are finding their way out of the Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka metropolitan areas. In 2018, 18 million foreign tourists trekked into rural areas, about 5 million more than those who simply enjoyed city indulgences. The gap is wider than it was in 2015, when 10.2 million foreign tourists ventured into the countryside and 9.5 million contented themselves in one of the big burgs.”
